Practicing Seat Belt Safety

Based on data from the Maryland State Police and the Maryland State Highway Safety Office, an average of 113 drivers and vehicle occupants per year have been killed in Maryland in accidents, due to being fully ejected from a vehicle between 2016 and 2020.

If you are a commercial auto driver who spends long hours on the road, seat belt use is one of the most effective ways to reduce injury or death in a crash. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 15,000 lives were saved in passenger vehicles in 2017 in the United States due to seat belt use.

Wearing a seat belt is the law. Commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers must use seat belts, according to Section 392.16 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. Passengers in large commercial trucks must now also wear seat belts, as of 2016, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
