Valentine’s Day is about romance, chocolates, and maybe some awkward texts to your crush. But if you’re driving uninsured, heartbreak might come in the form of fines and suspended registration instead of a broken romance.
In Maryland, it is required by law to maintain continuous auto insurance on every registered vehicle.
Auto Insurance in Maryland is Required, Not Optional
According to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA), drivers must carry at least the state’s minimum required insurance. Some of the main requirements include:
- Bodily Injury Liability – Covers injuries you cause to someone else
- Property Damage Liability – Covers damage you cause to someone else’s property
- Personal Injury Protection (PIP) – Pays medical bills and other expenses regardless of fault
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage – Protects you if someone else hits you and they don’t have insurance
That’s not optional, it’s the law. Without it, you can face steep fines and penalties.
Penalties Add Up
If your insurance lapses, insurers are required to notify the MVA. If your tags have not been returned, uninsured motorist penalties begin immediately.
According to the Maryland Department of Transportation penalties may include:
- $200 fine for the first 30 days uninsured
- $7 per day for each additional day uninsured
- Suspension of your registration and driver’s license if not resolved
- Possible SR22 requirement – A state-mandated certificate filed by your insurance company that proves you carry the required coverage, often required after serious violations or lapses in insurance
- Even if you don’t drive the car while uninsured, the fines will still stack up - kind of like getting Valentine’s texts from an ex you can’t block.
Proof of Insurance Is a Big Deal
Maryland Insurance Administration states that law enforcement can ask drivers for proof of insurance during traffic stops. If you don’t have it you can get cited immediately, with fines starting at $50 for a first offense.
That’s right, one missing card, one traffic stop, and your wallet might feel the heartbreak.
