The Uninsured Division (UD) handles claims in which someone is injured in an accident caused by another person who has no insurance to cover those injuries. The UD is a division of the State of Maryland administered by Maryland Auto Insurance.
The UD recently received a heartbreaking claim involving a fatal crash into a private residence.
This incident took place around 2:00 a.m., when a vehicle crashed into a ground floor apartment. A man in his fifties was asleep in bed at the time and sustained fatal injuries after becoming trapped beneath the vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle had been speeding through the residential neighborhood while impaired. He lost control of the car, resulting in the devastating impact. Upon arrival, authorities found the driver at the scene.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the vehicle involved was uninsured at the time of the accident.
The Uninsured Division (UD) Adjuster made contact with the driver multiple times. Initially, the driver denied responsibility, claiming that someone else had been driving the vehicle during the crash. However, as the trial date approached, he ultimately accepted accountability. The trial proceeded, and the driver appeared in court, agreeing to pay $30,000.
Since the at-fault vehicle was uninsured, the claimant’s estate, represented by the victim’s son, was eligible to seek compensation through Maryland Auto’s Uninsured Division. On behalf of the state, our Uninsured Division was able to step in and issue the statutory maximum payment of $30,000. While no amount of money can ever replace a loved one, the assistance provided by the Uninsured Division helped to alleviate some of the financial burdens faced by the family during this difficult time.
The uninsured driver is now responsible for repaying the Uninsured Division for the $30,000 paid on this claim. In addition to the tragic loss of life, there is no insurance coverage to repair his vehicle or the damage to the building. This case demonstrates the added financial risk of driving without insurance.
