Each March, Women’s History Month offers an opportunity to recognize the achievements, leadership, and lasting contributions of women across industries and communities including the insurance industry. As we celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, we reflect on the women who continue to shape the future of the industry.

Women Are a Driving Force in the Insurance Workforce

Women have long been a cornerstone of the insurance industry, and workforce data continues to highlight their significant impact.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, in 2024 women made up nearly 60% of the insurance workforce, exceeding their representation across many other sectors of the U.S. economy.

In addition, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2025 women held strong representation in several key roles, including:

  • Nearly 79% of claims and policy processing positions
  • Approximately 62% of insurance underwriters, reflecting recent growth in analytical and technical roles
  • More than 51% of insurance sales agents, helping customers understand coverage options, navigating claims processes, and maintaining financial security following unexpected events.

Progress and Opportunity in Leadership

While women represent more than half of the insurance workforce, leadership representation continues to evolve.

Industry reporting from Insurance Journal shows that women currently hold roughly 22% of C-suite positions across insurance organizations. Research from McKinsey & Company highlights some encouraging progress, reporting that women occupy nearly 40% of insurance board seats, and promotion rates into management roles continue to improve compared to many other industries. These trends reflect growing recognition of the value that diverse leadership perspectives bring to organizational performance and long-term strategy.

Maryland Auto’s Commitment to Supporting Women in Insurance:

At Maryland Auto Insurance, women play an essential role across departments and disciplines. From assisting policyholders and managing claims to analyzing risk and supporting operational strategy, this work helps ensure Maryland drivers have access to reliable coverage and support when they need it most.

At Maryland Auto Insurance, we are committed to:

  • Celebrating the women who support policyholders and communities every day
  • Recognizing professionals who mentor and inspire future leaders
  • Continuing to foster a workplace culture where collaboration, growth, and leadership opportunities are accessible to all

We also have an ongoing commitment to professional development, mentorship, and leadership growth.

Each year, Maryland Auto Insurance hosts a Women’s Conference designed to foster collaboration, professional development, and meaningful dialogue among insurance professionals and community leaders. The conference brings together professionals from across the insurance industry and beyond toe share insights, encourage mentorship, and create an environment where women can build connections and advance their careers.

Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller served as the conference’s keynote speaker in 2023, highlighting the importance of confidence in the career growth of women, “When women have confidence in themselves and support each other, it elevates not just their careers, but the entire community.”

During the 2025 conference keynote, Maryland State Senator Pamela Beidle emphasized the importance of diverse perspectives in leadership and decision-making. “Bringing diversity to the table, whether it’s gender, geography, or culture, means having everybody involved in making decisions.”

Similarly, 2024’s keynote speaker Tisha Edwards, Secretary of Appointments for Governor Wes Moore’s Office, encouraged attendees to prioritize mentorship and intentional leadership development. “At this stage in my career, the thing that I am most focused on is elevating and supporting women in leadership.”

Through initiatives like the Women’s Conference, Maryland Auto continues to create spaces where women can connect, develop new skills, and strengthen their leadership presence within insurance and auto-related careers.

Looking Ahead

Women have helped shape the insurance industry for generations, and their leadership continues to guide its future.

This Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, Maryland Auto Insurance proudly recognizes the women who strengthen our workplace, serve our customers, and help keep Maryland drivers protected every day.

Together, we look forward to continued progress, expanded leadership opportunities, and a stronger future for the insurance industry and the communities we serve.
