Spotlight on Sylvia Selmon-Hopkins

Sylvia Selmon-Hopkins began her career in the insurance industry in 1995, working in an agent’s office before opening her own GEICO agency in Annapolis in 2006. Inspired by her father, who encouraged her to pursue a career in insurance from the age of five, Sylvia embraced the industry’s stability and essential nature. Her father’s foresight proved accurate when, during the COVID-19 pandemic, her office remained open while others were forced to close, never missing a payroll. 

With 30 years of experience, Sylvia has built strong, enduring relationships with key industry partners like Maryland Auto. She views Maryland Auto as a vital resource, offering options for drivers who may not qualify with other insurers. The insurer’s excellent claims handling is something she consistently hears praise for from her policyholders. Additionally, the ability to provide multi-line policies for Maryland Auto’s clients has been essential to keeping her business successful and maintaining strong relationships with her customers. 

Outside of her business, Sylvia is deeply involved in her local community, regularly sponsoring and participating in events. She believes that, “being visible and active in the community fosters trust with clients and shows that a portion of their premium dollars is reinvested into the neighborhood.” Sylvia’s participation in community events has also enhanced her personal brand as a business owner. “people are now surprised when they don’t see me at local gatherings,” she said.  Sylvia credits her strong community presence and commitment to service as key factors in her continued success.
